Judging by the time lapse between posts 1 and 2, I'm not going to be very good at this blogging thing.
This time of year has 2 things on my mind...
1) The election!
Wow, have things really heated up. I can't beleive the election is in less than 2 months away. Much to the dismay of my military family and LU friends...I'm not a republican. But don't think I'm on the Obama train (yet) either! I'm not registered with a party...and I'm very much undecided. (The facebook quiz says I'm a moderate....whatever that means). My brain is swimming with articles, speeches, debates, commercials, and interviews. I'm slowly learning about each candidate and their views on issues that are most important to me. (In no particular order and by no means comprehensive: the war (in iraq and Afghanistan), education, special education, abortion/infanticide, sex education, health care, taxes...to name a few) I have alot to say, but I'll pick one particular topic related to the election....
Here's what I have to say right now! I am sooo over the attacks towards opposing candidates. The ridiculous youtube videos that make Barack into a racist or the anti-Christ and McCain into an old man checkin' out Palin's derriere are annoying-yes. As offensive as I find some of these videos, I believe in freedom of speech. But what really bothers me are the speeches and attack ads endorsed by the candidates, who are running to be the next leader of our country.
Seriously, I'm so tired of them having to put each other down...in my opinion neither of their convention speeches contained substance...they just talked in generalities and made comments about their opponents. And look at their ads. They rarely say why we should vote for them, they just try to convince us not to vote for their opponent. It makes me feel like the only reason to vote for a politician is to keep another one from winning. I just don't understand when or why that became acceptable.
If you were competing for miss america and they asked you "why you should you become the next role model for young girls?", would you say "Well because Miss Hawaii is a slut and Miss Washington has sketchy pictures on the internet, and Miss Alaska made seriously racist remarks about native americans!" No way! That would be absolutely unacceptable!
At a job interview, when they ask "Why should we hire you?", would you say "Ok, so I saw the guy you interviewed before me, you don't want hire him! He was in one of my classes and he's not too bright.
"In the Olympics did the US women's gymnasts ever talk about how they would probably won Gold if China hadn't cheated by entering prepubescant 65 lb machines! No way!
I could keep going with my cheesy examples...but really? If it was in any other venue would that type of behavior be acceptable? I just think that the character of a president should be something we want our young people to strive for, and as a teacher I teach my students not to "bully" which pretty much is what these speeches and commercials equate to in my mind. If they are any indication of the future of America, well, that makes me sad.
2) Fall TV!
Yeh, I know it seems rather ridiculous and trivial after I talk about an event that has the potential to change our future. However, you have to understand that I have watched very little television over the past 2 years. (I paid for more movies in the theatre than ever before, but that's another topic...) Working at night really cut down on my TV time.
I'm super excited and very sad to see the last ever season of ER, a show I've watched since I was a child. And I can't wait for the season premiers of Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy, the prime time soaps that have become my guilty pleasure. If you have suggestions for shows you enjoy, let me know! So far...
Some shows I am considering watching....
~One Tree Hill (My sister's roommate and her tivo, might have gotten me hooked!)
~House (I've watched reruns and...I love that show!)
~Ugly Betty (I'm curious)
~The Office (It's hilarious)
~Biggest Loser (I'm sorry, but I'm a sucker for that show...I don't know what it is)
Some shows I will not be watching...
~Hole in the Wall (Really!? What in the world!)
~Lost (I'm sorry, I just don't get it!)
~90210 (The first one was enough)
I'm just excited to spend the first year of my life vegging a little. This will be the first time in my life that I haven't had 2 (or more) jobs. It's a commitment I've made to myself. Of course, I don't want to spend all of my time watching TV (which is why I'm super excited about my first ever DVR!).
I want to spend time scrapbooking, getting into more photography, reading (the many unread books on my shelves), exercizing (1/2 marathon in 17 weeks!), and enjoying the beach and art galleries around here!
So here's to what the fall and my new Florida life has to bring! :)
